A Foundation Mare. A Lasting Legacy.

Some mares are remembered for their beauty. Others are remembered for the generations they helped create. Alexandria—affectionately known as “Lexi”—will always be remembered for both.

Foaled April 4, 2006, Lexi is a United Kingdom–imported F1 Drum Horse mare, registered with the International Drum Horse Association as D0291M. Standing 15.3 hands, she is a striking bay tobiano with a stout, big-boned build, abundant feather, powerful movement, and the unmistakable presence of a traditional Drum Horse. She is sired by the Gypsy stallion Bruno and out of a bay Shire mare, bringing together equal parts Gypsy Vanner and Shire heritage.

Imported to the United States by Black Forest Shires and Gypsy Horses, Lexi later became one of the influential foundation mares at Horse Feathers Farm in Texas. From the beginning, she was admired not only for her substance and feather, but also for her exceptionally sweet disposition. Horse Feathers Farm described her as a beautiful mover whose kindness was consistently passed to her foals. Even at her first show, Lexi demonstrated the quiet, dependable nature that made her such a special mare, remaining calm and composed in a completely new environment.
The Mare Behind an Exceptional Family

Lexi’s greatest contribution to the Drum Horse breed can be seen through the remarkable family she produced. Horse Feathers Farm records five Drum Horse foals from Lexi between 2014 and 2020: Horse Feathers Daphne, Horse Feathers Caspian, Horse Feathers Aurora, Horse Feathers Bucephalus, and Horse Feathers The Artful Dodger.

Her first foal, Horse Feathers Daphne, inherited so much of what made Lexi extraordinary. Daphne developed into a tall, elegant, and feminine mare with abundant silky feather, beautiful movement, and her dam’s unmistakably sweet disposition. She later matured into a certified 17.1-hand mare and became a pillar of the Crown Cavalo broodmare herd and breeding program. Through Daphne, Lexi’s influence continues within each new generation of Crown Cavalo Drum Horses.

Lexi’s son Horse Feathers Caspian pursued a dressage path and has been described as working within an Olympic equestrian program, demonstrating the athletic ability and versatility that Lexi was capable of passing to her offspring. Her daughter Horse Feathers Aurora further continued this distinguished Drum Horse family.

Her 2018 colt, Horse Feathers Bucephalus, affectionately known as “Beau,” was praised from an early age for his tremendous suspension, natural self-carriage, balance, height, feather, color, and exceptional disposition. Like his dam, Beau was described as sweet, curious, and eager to meet people—another example of the gentle character that became one of Lexi’s most consistent gifts to her offspring.

Lexi’s youngest recorded foal, Horse Feathers The Artful Dodger, was born in 2020. This substantial F2 colt was admired for his conformation, movement, feather, easy handling, and potential to mature between approximately 16.2 and 17 hands. His quality made him an exciting prospect for a future Drum Horse breeding program and further demonstrated Lexi’s ability to produce impressive horses when crossed with thoughtfully selected stallions.

Across different pairings, Lexi repeatedly produced the qualities breeders seek in a true Drum Horse: size, bone, beautiful movement, abundant feather, athletic ability, and—perhaps most importantly—the kind, willing disposition that makes these magnificent horses exceptional partners.
Her Crown Cavalo Story

Lexi’s place in the Crown Cavalo story is deeply personal. Through her daughter Daphne, she was already part of our program long before she became part of our farm. Having the opportunity to own and care for the mare behind one of our most treasured foundation females brought that story full circle.

In 2025, Lexi was sold to a wonderful home in Michigan. While saying goodbye to a mare with such history and significance was not easy, we are incredibly grateful that she found a family who recognizes her value, appreciates everything she represents, and gives her the love and care she deserves.

Although Lexi no longer resides at Crown Cavalo, she will never truly leave our program. Her influence remains visible in Daphne, in Daphne’s offspring, and in every future generation that carries forward Lexi’s substance, movement, feather, and gentle heart.

Alexandria is more than a mare we once owned. She is a matriarch behind an important branch of the Crown Cavalo family—a foundation mare whose legacy continues to grow with every generation.
