The High King Whose Legacy Still Reigns

In Irish, “Ard Rí” means “High King”—a fitting name for a stallion whose influence has continued long beyond his own lifetime. Foaled in 1995, Clononeen Ard Ri was a magnificent 15-hand red tobiano Gypsy Vanner stallion, registered as GV00080F and IDHA F0124S. He was imported to the United States in 2003, during the formative years of Gypsy Vanner breeding in North America. His sire and dam were recorded simply as Foundation Stock, connecting him directly to the traditional bloodlines from which the modern registered Gypsy Vanner was developed.

Ard Ri was especially valuable as a color sire. His documented genetics were eeAaTT, meaning he was genetically red and homozygous for tobiano. Because he carried two copies of tobiano, every direct offspring inherited a tobiano gene from him. He also passed one recessive red allele to every foal, allowing that red heritage to continue even through offspring whose own coats appeared black or bay. The mare’s genetics ultimately determined whether the red base would be visibly expressed, but Ard Ri contributed both remarkable predictability and exciting possibilities to every breeding.

Although Ard Ri’s recorded American foal crop was limited, his influence proved far greater than his numbers. An archived VannerCentral record reports only eight foals born in the United States, making his direct sons and daughters an increasingly rare link to this foundational stallion. His recorded offspring included Blarney, Royal Lady, Ailish, VV Jessup, VV Jarvis, Glenn Rainier Case N Point, and High Valley Miss Lily, with his descendants appearing in both Gypsy Vanner and Drum Horse pedigrees.

Perhaps his most important contribution to the Drum Horse world came through his celebrated son, Avalon’s King Arthur. Produced from Ard Ri and the Clydesdale mare Lady Abbigail of Avalon, Arthur became an impressive F1 Drum Horse stallion combining equal parts Gypsy Vanner and Clydesdale. He matured to a certified 16.2 hands and was registered with the International Drum Horse Association as D0154S. Through Arthur, Ard Ri’s blood became part of a new generation of tall, powerful, heavily feathered Drum Horses while preserving the unmistakable color and character of his Gypsy heritage.

Ard Ri’s importance is therefore measured not merely by the foals he produced, but by what those foals made possible. Through Arthur and subsequent generations, his influence continues within the Crown Cavalo Drum Horse breeding program, where his name represents a direct connection to the foundational Gypsy Vanner horses that helped shape the breed in America.

Today, Clononeen Ard Ri has passed away, and his frozen semen is listed as sold out. His legacy can no longer be recreated through new direct offspring; it must be carried forward through the carefully selected sons, daughters, and descendants already bearing his blood. That scarcity makes every remaining connection to Ard Ri increasingly meaningful to breeders who value pedigree, genetic history, and the preservation of influential foundation lines.

Clononeen Ard Ri was more than a striking red tobiano stallion. He was a foundation sire, a source of rare and predictable color genetics, and the High King behind one of the Drum Horse world’s most distinguished stallion lines. Though he no longer stands in the breeding shed, his legacy still reigns in the pedigrees, presence, and promise of the horses who carry his blood today.
