At first glance, Crown Cavalo Luca is the picture of classic Drum Horse elegance—a dramatic black-and-white tobiano colt with commanding presence, substantial draft type, and the unmistakable beauty that makes the breed so extraordinary. His quality was recognized early when he earned the prestigious title of 2026 IDHA Virtual Show Grand Champion Stallion, establishing Luca as a young horse with tremendous promise for the show ring, breeding shed, and beyond.

Foaled on April 15, 2025, Luca is an IDHA-registered F2 Drum Horse expected to mature at approximately 17 hands. He is sired by Crown Cavalo Ritz Carlton and out of LIC’s Glitz & Glam, bringing together a carefully balanced heritage of 25% Gypsy, 18.75% Shire, and 56.25% Clydesdale. This Clydesdale-forward combination gives Luca the size, substance, and impressive draft presence desired in a modern Drum Horse, complemented by the feather, elegance, and distinctive character of his Gypsy and Shire ancestry.

Luca’s sire, Crown Cavalo Ritz Carlton, is a double-dilute, homozygous tobiano Drum Horse known for producing cream and tobiano in every foal. From Ritz, Luca inherited both the cream dilution and the tobiano pattern—yet the cream gene remains nearly invisible beneath Luca’s naturally dark coat.

That hidden color is one of Luca’s most fascinating and valuable qualities. Although he appears black, Luca is genetically a smoky black tobiano, with the color genotype EeaaCrcrTtW20/n. Beneath his black coat, he carries both a hidden cream gene and a hidden recessive red gene. UC Davis explains that one copy of cream produces palomino on a chestnut base, buckskin on a bay base, and smoky black on a black base; an E/e horse can also pass the recessive red allele to approximately half of its offspring.

When paired with appropriately selected and color-tested mares, Luca has the potential to produce highly coveted palomino and buckskin foals, along with smoky black, black, bay, chestnut, and additional possibilities. Because he carries one copy of tobiano, those colors may be produced in either tobiano or non-tobiano form, depending on the genetics of the mare. Luca has an individual 50% chance of passing his cream gene, a 50% chance of passing his recessive red gene, and a 50% chance of passing tobiano to each foal. The resulting color and pattern will ultimately depend upon which genes are also contributed by the mare.
